A caster, also spelled castor, is an unpowered wheel assembly installed at the bottom of equipment, carts, furniture and machinery to enable easy rolling movement. It consists of wheel, fork bracket, bearing, kingpin and mounting structure, widely adopted in daily life, commercial settings and heavy industrial scenarios.
Main Types of Casters
1. Rigid Caster
Also known as fixed caster, it features a non-rotating bracket and only moves straight forward and backward. With stronger structure and stable load capacity, it is perfect for scenarios requiring fixed direction, such as assembly lines, production conveyors and warehouse trolleys.
2. Swivel Caster
Built with a swivel joint and kingpin structure, it can rotate 360° freely, allowing flexible direction change in narrow spaces. It is the most common type for office chairs, shopping carts, hospital beds and mobile service trolleys. Many swivel casters add double ball bearings for smoother rotation and higher stability.
3. Brake Caster
On the basis of swivel or rigid casters, equipped with side brake, total lock and swivel lock designs. It effectively prevents unwanted sliding on slopes or flat ground, greatly improving safety for medical equipment, industrial carts and display racks.
4. Heavy Duty Industrial Caster
Specially designed for high load, high temperature and harsh working conditions. Made of forged steel, cast iron and high-strength polyurethane materials, it supports ultra-heavy weight and resists impact, abrasion and chemicals, ideal for factories, logistics terminals and large mechanical equipment.
Caster Mounting Styles
- Plate Mount: Four-hole mounting plate, stable installation, suitable for heavy-duty equipment.
- Stem Mount: Threaded or round stem design, easy to install, commonly used for furniture and light equipment.
Common Applications
Casters can be seen everywhere: office furniture, medical hospital beds, supermarket shopping carts, warehouse logistics trolleys, factory production equipment, aerospace tool trolleys and industrial storage racks. Different wheel materials (PU, rubber, nylon, cast iron, forged steel) match various floors and working environments.
